North Charleston Police make arrest in December Joppa Ave homicide

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) arrested a suspect in connection to a December homicide that left a 20-year-old man dead on Wednesday.

NCPD arrested John Thomas Jones Jr., 22. He is accused of the murder of Christopher Rivers.

Jones is charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime, according to NCPD spokesman Harve Jacobs.

On Dec. 19, 2023, police responded to 1994 Joppa Avenue shortly after midnight after receiving reports of several gunshots.

When police arrived, they found an unresponsive male, identified as Rivers , in the driver’s seat of a Nissan Rogue that was left running.

Rivers was pronounced dead on the scene from a gunshot wound. A second victim was reported wounded, although that victim has not been identified.

Jones was arrested on Ashley Avenue in Charleston.
