Annual “Storm the Citadel” event brings Lowcountry students together

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- Saturday, The Citadel hosted its annual science, technology, engineering and mathematics or STEM event called “Storm the Citadel”.

It’s one of the largest of its kind in the Lowcountry, for K-12 students.

It’s fun for all ages even parents like Ezetta McCray.

“My child is 11, she’s at Charleston Development Academy Public Charter school and it’s very cool to watch her at this event,” McCray said.

Each year for “Storm the Citadel”, teams of students travel to campus and compete in various challenges including launching hand-made catapults called trebuchets, firing water bottle rockets, testing miniature bridges, and competing with Lego robots.

“It’s an event that the Citadel engineering team puts on every single year. This is my second year hosting, I’m the emcee for the event,” the Host of the event, William Harris said.

It’s a way for the citadel to promote STEM education and allow students to use the skills they learn in the classroom in tangible, exciting ways.
