Today in History: 160 years since Hunley submarine’s historic mission & disappearance

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) – On Feb. 17, 1864, a Confederate submarine made history. The Hunley submarine became the world’s first submarine to sink an enemy warship in combat. The eight-man crew fired a torpedo and sank the USS Housatonic – a blockade ship stationed about four miles from the entrance of Charleston Harbor. However, following the mission, the submarine disappeared.
