CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The International African American Museum is having their signature “Awakening of the Ancestors Through Music” event with the Daise family, the creators of the Nickelodeon show “Gullah Gullah Island.”

“This hybrid event will allow audiences to experience songs that were sung by African ancestors that continue to inspire worship and activism today throughout the Gullah Geechee Corridor, around the U.S., and the world,” said the IAAM website.

IAAM says this year’s theme is “We Are The Future Our Ancestors Dreamed”

IAAM says the performance of Gullah Geechee songs and stories is expected to last 90 minutes and showcase heritage, resilience, tenacity, faith and creativity. Following the performance a 30-minute interactive facilitation to engage the audience in understanding the past, present, and future of Gullah Geechee people.

“Guest speakers will not only demonstrate various musical styles, but will also share information on the historical, cultural and linguistic contexts of melodies, rhythms, lyrics and movements that can sometimes be traced back to specific regions in Africa,” IAAM added.
