Dog exposed to rabid bat in North Charleston neighborhood

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – State health officials say a rabid bat was discovered in a Charleston County neighborhood earlier this week.

The bat was found near Long Shadow Lane and New Ryder Road in North Charleston.

Officials with the South Carolina Department of Public Health said the bat was submitted to their laboratory for testing on Wednesday and was confirmed to have rabies the next day.

A dog was exposed and will be quarantined as required in the South Carolina Rabies Control Act. No people are known to have been exposed.

If you or your pets have come into contact with this bat or another animal suspected of having rabies, you should contact the DPH Charleston office at 843-953-4713.
