North Charleston PD increases patrols ahead of Labor Day Weekend

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)–Officials from the North Charleston Police Department are discussing new measures to help crack down on the recent increase of fatal accidents on the city’s roadways. Especially as they prepare for a busy holiday weekend.

The North Charleston Police Department told News 2 that most crashes that happen are preventable. Still, many people involved are usually distracted by their phones or going above the speed limit.

Officers said the department has seen 22 fatal accidents in 2024 and six of those happened in just the last few weeks.

“We have had an unusual uptick in collisions over the last few weeks. That’s a lot of people. These were very nasty, high-speed collisions,” said Capt. Rick Keys with North Charleston PD.

NCPD said most accidents are caused by distracted drivers on their phones, driving above the speed limit, and making incomplete stops.

Charleston Moves is a nonprofit that advocates for safer streets. Executive director Katie Zimmerman said she’s seen distracted driving firsthand.
