The Citadel claims Lowcountry bragging rights winning the inaugural Lowcountry Boil Bowl

LADSON, S.C. — Bolstered by an elite effort from veteran graduate transfer Johnathan Bennett along a slew of key defensive plays down the stretch, The Citadel (1-0, 0-0 SoCon) completed an 18-point comeback over the course of a majority of the second half of the inaugural Lowcountry Boil Bowl, eventually upending regional rival Charleston Southern (0-1, 0-0 Big South) via a narrow 22-21 final mark Saturday at Buccaneer Field.

KEY NOTES
– Bennett concluded the contest 10-for-17 for 170 passing yards and one score; he also added a vital 55 rushing yards on 15 carries with one more touchdown
– Corey Ibrahim led the running back corps with 16 carries for a net 68 yards; Cooper Wallace tacked on 40 yards on 10 carries
– Dervon Pesnell lit up the CSU secondary with three major receptions for 86 yards; Javonte Graves-Billips contributed four catches for 33 yards as well
– Defensively, Thomas Wyatt paced the squad with nine total tackles; Je’Mazin Roberts added eight total with a notable three tackles-for-loss
– DaVonyae Pettis forced the lone turnover for Charleston Southern late in the fourth while Chris Benton scored the recovery
– Ben Barnes concluded the day 1-for-2 on field goals; he also tacked on the go-ahead score behind his 1-for-1 mark on PATs
