Heavy Showers & Thunderstorms Developing Across Parts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida

Leftover Tropical Energy Fueling Gusty Afternoon Storms

09/18/24 2:18pm

Good afternoon everyone. We still have a lot of tropical energy left over from our storm that came ashore in Louisiana, plus our tropical low that impacted parts of the Carolinas.

Sunshine, combined with relatively warm temps, high humidity, and a weak subtropical jet stream, are helping to set off some heavy popcorn-like showers and thunderstorms across parts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Action is scattered in variety, but we do see an area of more concentrated clusters west/southwest of Charleston, SC.

We are also seeing scattered heavy showers & thunderstorms off of the Savannah, GA coast, and north and west as well. Locally heavy thunderstorms are also lurking around the Tallahasse, Gainesville, and in between the West Palm/Pt. St. Lucie areas of Florida.

This will be the story for the rest of the day until things begin to slow down after sunset. Look for locally heavy thunderstorms, some of which could reach severe limits. Even if they don’t, wind gusts of 40-50mph, small hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rain, are possible for those who do see some thunderstorms in their area.
