Driver dies after collision with utility pole on US-17 alternate

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly accident that occurred Saturday night when a car collided with a utility pole on US-17 Alternate, approximately five miles north of Summerville.

Sgt. Tyler Tidwell stated that the 2001 GMC Yukon was traveling north near Clubhouse Road around 11:35 p.m. when it veered off the road. The vehicle first went to the left, then to the right, struck a ditch, and ultimately hit a utility pole.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has not yet disclosed the victim’s identity.

An investigation is ongoing.
