South Carolinians for Alternative to the Death Penalty held vigil for Richard Moore

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Friday night in North Charleston, the ‘South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty’ group held a vigil for Richard Moore at Cokesbury United Methodist Church.

The group had previously asked South Carolina Governor McMaster to delay the execution. They said they will hold a vigil for every execution by the death penalty in South Carolina until the law is changed.

“Our governor reports to be a Christian which means he reports to follow Jesus with his life, and I ask this every time: Governor McMaster study the scriptures, answer this for me, let me know who Jesus would execute?” said Rev. Bryan Pigford.

Richard Moore was sentenced to death Friday night for the September 1999 shooting of store clerk James Mahoney in Spartanburg, where he went into the store unarmed. After an altercation with the storeowner, they were both shot, and Moore was charged and later sentenced to the state’s death row. Tonight, South Carolinians for alternatives to the death penalty held a prayer vigil for Richard Moore in protest of capital punishment.
