HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — A Hilton Head Island woman is recovering in a Charleston hospital after being attacked during an apparent armed robbery on Friday.
It’s what the criminals did to the woman as her cash was stolen that has many people in the Lowcountry shocked and concerned.
Maria Hernandez sits at MUSC in Charleston wrapped in bandages as the victim of an unsolicited attack Friday night, her son Francisco said.
She was driving from the bank and ran over something in the road just before 10 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and her son said.
“She didn’t know what it was, so she just put the car in park and the doors automatically unlocked,” Francisco said. “She said that one guy opened the door, and she doesn’t know if it’s a knife or something else that they put on her stomach, like telling her to move.”
Francisco said two men were involved in the crime. One was rifling through her purse and car dash and the other hit Maria.
“My mom told them to take everything,” said Francisco. “She doesn’t care about the car. Just please let me go. Take everything, you know.”
