SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – It started thirty years ago when a couple of guys were sitting at a bar on New Year’s Day and decided to take a jump in the ocean as a way to cleanse themselves going into the New Year.
What that first plunge turned into is now known as Dunleavy’s Polar Plunge, which raises money for a very special cause.
“Oh my gosh, what a way to start off the new year.”
Patrons started packing the pub early on New Year’s Day, refreshing themselves on a pint or two of liquid courage for what was to come.
With creative costumes and smiling faces, participants gathered to celebrate the 30th year of Dunleavy’s plunge.
“And the sun is shining, there’s a smile on everybody’s face, it’s a great cause, and it’s a fun day,” said Bill Dunleavy, creator of Dunleavy’s Polar Plunge.
They didn’t start freezing for a reason until a few years after the plunge began, the reason being the South Carolina Special Olympics. As of 2024, over $600,000 has been donated to the local athletes.
