Personal property could become county-owned for Airport Connector Road project

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – For folks living around where the Airport Connector Road project is expected to be, where Interstate 526 meets West Montague Avenue, Charleston County might be looking to purchase the property.

Now that Charleston County has received the environmental go-ahead they need from the Federal Highway Administration, project managers want to get permission from the County Council to purchase personal property through eminent domain, even if they don’t end up needing to.

The Airport Connector Road is expected to be around the interchange off I-526 at West Montague Avenue, but Charleston County Public Works Construction Project Manager Sheila Parker says they don’t necessarily know what homes or businesses it could impact since much of the area they’re looking to build around is vacant.

“We haven’t begun negotiations with property owners,” Parker said. “But for projects of this size, we like to ask permission sometimes ahead of time just to know we have that support from the council.”…
