Surfer saves young child from drowning in rip current on Folly Beach

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD)– A surfer on Folly Beach saved a young child from almost drowning; now he’s reminding people to be careful of rip currents this summer at the beach.

27-year-old Shep Davis has been surfing on Folly Beach for over 20 years and is the owner of Charleston Surf Company, where he teaches surf lessons. He spends almost every day in the water, but Thursday morning he saw a scary situation.

“I saw these two children and I’m assuming probably 6 and 10 years old, definitely brothers. I caught a wave it’s dead low tide and when the tide is super low it will go from 0 to 100 really quick,” said David. “The smaller brother got swept out in a riptide and he’s probably 35 yards away from me, he’s got goggles on, he can barely swim, he’s blood curdling screams. All the signs of act now or a catastrophic event is coming.”…
