CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston Water System is breaking ground on the final phase of a massive underground tunnel project that will connect sewage pipes in rural parts of the county to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The West Ashley Sewer Tunnel will sprawl four miles across West Ashley and will connect the towns of Hollywood, Ravenel and Meggett. The six-phase project began in 1999 to replace the original, degraded tunnels that were built in the 1960s.
