Charleston board approves tree removal on Daniel Island despite widespread opposition

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) A plan to remove 24 protected trees on Daniel Island is moving forward, despite strong opposition from residents and community leaders.

Charleston’s Board of Zoning Appeals voted 4–1 Tuesday night to approve a variance request from Holder Properties, clearing the way for the next phase of its Nowell Creek Village townhome development.

The trees are located along Daniel Island Drive, near what many consider the island’s historic entrance. Hundreds of residents submitted public comments ahead of the vote, voicing concerns over safety, aesthetics, and what they describe as a larger pattern of overdevelopment…
