Charleston community gathers for annual reading of Declaration of Independence

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – More than 500 community members gathered in downtown Charleston Thursday morning for the 13th annual reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Members of the Washington Light Infantry kicked off the event singing the national anthem, praying, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and rereading the Declaration at the Old Exchange Building.

The director of the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, Tony Youmans, says the Washington Light Infantry wanted to revive this tradition that started when the building opened as an attraction in 1966…
