SCDOT kicks off Ashley Phosphate Road safety project with local and state leaders

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The South Carolina Department of Transportation kicked off the beginning of major safety project in North Charleston.

Local and state leaders celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ashley Phosphate Road safety improvement project. Many said it has been long-awaited and it ranked as a top priority for the department. Over time, SCDOT held public input meetings allowing this project to be tailored specifically to the North Charleston area.

“Some of the improvements you will see in the coming months include: high visibility crosswalks, ADA ramps for improving pedestrian access, crosswalks with countdown signals, new pavement markings, flashing yellow arrows, new traffic signals, and raised medians – that have been shown to reduce crashes as well as new lighting across the area,” Justin Powell, secretary of transportation at SCDOT, said…
