NWS Charleston to introduce changes to flash flood program starting Aug. 1

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Emergency management directors and officials from the National Weather Service Charleston will hold a briefing Tuesday regarding changes to flash flooding event criteria and warnings.

Slated for 11 a.m. at the South Aviation Avenue in North Charleston, officials plan to discuss upcoming changes that will start on Aug. 1 to “improve consistency across NWS offices and more effectively highlight minor flooding events.” With the change, the National Weather Service will begin using the “Base” Flash Flood Warning for what is currently known as a Flood Advisory.

According to information provided by the National Weather Service, the new flash flood event criteria would be called when multiple roads or intersections are flooded and closed, vehicles stranded and or stalled in flood waters, structures surrounded by flood waters or flood waters enter the crawspaces of structures, nonforecast point river gage exceeds its minor flood stage, or a dam or levee failure occurs or is imminent…
