Berkeley County EMS seeing more heat-related emergencies

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Berkeley County EMS officials say the recent heat wave is driving up emergency calls and warn the danger doesn’t always end when the official advisories do.

Deputy Chief Monty Jenkins says his crews responded to six heat-related calls over the weekend alone, including patients suffering from dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, and signs of dehydration.

“We start off with those signs and symptoms like dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating,” said Jenkins. “But when we get into loss of consciousness, confusion, when we stop sweating—even though it’s hot, those could be signs of a heat stroke. And at that time, it could become life threatening.”…
