This Day in History: July 29, 1981: Citadel Mall opens

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A new shopping mall opened its doors for shoppers in West Ashley on July 29, 1981.

Developers Jacobs, Visconsi & Jacobs brought Citadel Mall to life at the corner of Savannah Highway and Sam Rittenberg, anchored by major stores like Sears and Belk.

Some of the stores would change over the years. The Sears closed up shop and JC Penney has come and gone; so did the old movie theater. Now there’s the 3D capable Citadel Stadium 16 theater, along with Belk, Dillards, and Dicks Sporting Goods…
