Local school’s beloved custodian celebrates, earns American citizenship

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — They call him Mr. Freddie at the Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School.

He’s a favorite among the faculty, staff and students alike, working as a custodian, or “day porter,” as they call them at the school.

And he has a very special story. On Wednesday, the school held a special cookout for all of the custodians in the West Ashley area, but Mr. Freddie had a unique reason to smile. A couple of weeks ago, he became an American citizen, thanks to the special bond with the school that calls him family…
