This Day in History: July 30, 1967: Dr. Martin Luther King speaks in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his second and final visit to the Holy City in the summer of 1967.

The Civil Rights leader spoke to a crowd of about 3,000 people at Charleston County Hall on King Street.

South Carolina Civil Rights pioneer Esau Jenkins introduced King ahead of the speech, which lasted a little more than a half hour and focused on racism in America, poverty and war…
