MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) — More than one million gallons of hazardous pollutants have been removed from the USS Yorktown as a years-long environmental cleanup project stretches into its final months, according to the South Carolina Office of Resilience (SCOR).
The second phase of the remediation effort has resulted in the disposal of more than 796,000 gallons of contaminated water and more than 4,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil since it began in February.
