Charleston, S.C. – A widespread soaking is underway for coastal South Carolina and southeast Georgia, where a Flood Watch remains in effect through early Monday morning. Heavy rain bands moving inland could dump 1 to 3 inches of rain across the region, with localized totals exceeding 5 inches.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, already saturated soils will increase the risk of flash flooding in both urban and rural areas. Streets in Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head, Savannah, and Brunswick could become impassable tonight, while creeks and rivers may quickly spill over their banks.
Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, especially after dark when hazards are harder to see. Low-lying neighborhoods, poor-drainage areas, and flood-prone intersections are likely trouble spots.
