Charleston’s Most Underrated Meal Comes From This Food Truck

The Lowcountry may be the land of peel-and-eat shrimp and crab caught right off the dock, but whenever I find myself back on the sandy stretches of Kiawah Island just outside of Charleston, South Carolina, my favorite beach-day meal hails from waters decidedly farther north.

Maine Line’s seafood truck has been a fixture on Johns Island’s Betsy Kerrison Parkway since 2015 and a staple of my beach trips for just as long. Helmed by Maine-born friends and business partners Jacob Bichrest and Chuck Buser, the truck features lobster hauled out of Harpswell, Maine’s waters by Bichrest’s family business and brought South multiple times weekly.

My Favorite Underrated Meal In Charleston

They’ve moved locations over the years, crossing the road, but the humble trailer’s fresh offerings, from fish tacos to fried shrimp, have blessedly remained the same. (They even sell cheeseburgers and chicken tenders for the turf-loving set.) For me, though, their menu might as well only have one item, as it’s my go-to every time: Their signature lobster roll. Piled high into a thick, split-top bun, the tender chunks of lobster meat are mixed with a just-right amount of mayo (or with warm butter, if that’s your preference) and served with potato chips.
