Family-friendly sports bar Cleats will close at the end of the month. Owner Jeremiah Schenzel says that it’s the right time to close down the 1640 Meeting Street Road establishment. Jeremiah, who also owns breakfast spot Daps, says that he and his wife, Jill Schenzel, are consolidating their restaurants (Jill runs chicken-centric Rudy Royale) and that shutting down Cleats made the most sense.
“We decided that Cleats wasn’t going to be the project that we needed to focus on,” says Jeremiah, “We have other projects that are super successful, and we have things down the pipeline that we just think are going to be better off. Some opportunities came up specifically to Daps that made a lot more sense to put the energy and focus into.”
Cleats opened in February 2024 as a modern take on the typical sports bar. The menu offered a wide range of hot and cold selections, from pit beef to a red Thai shrimp roll to an egg and eggplant sandwich. The wings were sold by the pound, tossed in a green hatch chili sauce, and served with a side of queso.
