CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)– The Charleston County School District is working to bring Hispanic students back to the classroom after noticing a trend in absences at the start of the new school year.
In the first week of school, Charleston County School District reported absences across the county, but especially in North Charleston and West Ashley, where there is a large Hispanic population.
“What we’re hearing from a lot of our families is fear, especially from our MML (multilingual learners) population,” said Dr. Shavonna Coakley, the Associate Superintendent of School Support. “How do we work with each of those families, meet them where they’re at, and make sure we ensure them if their child is in school, we’re going to provide all the necessary supports around those hierarchies of needs.”…
