Tenants: Poor conditions, slow responses persist at Charleston Housing Authority

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Some people living in downtown Charleston public housing say, although their rent may come at a discount, the conditions they have been living in for months aren’t worth the price.

Several tenants detailed some of these conditions to the Charleston Housing Authority back in March, which included caved-in ceilings, what tenants believed were roach feces and areas that appeared to look like mold. It was discovered from a Freedom of Information Act request that not all of these units were getting inspected regularly, despite the Charleston Housing Authority promising that they would conduct quarterly HUD-administered inspections in 2023.

The Charleston Housing Authority operates 1,382 public housing households and over 1,500 Housing Choice Voucher Program participants living in private accommodations, according to its website…
