North Charleston soul food restaurant receives $50K grant

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — A longtime North Charleston soul food restaurant has recently received a $50,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express.

Bertha’s Kitchen received funding as part of the “Backing Historic Small Restaurants” program, which supports restaurants across the country in their efforts to upgrade and grow their businesses.

Originally founded by Albertha Grant over 40 years ago, the restaurant, now run by her two daughters, remains true to its roots, serving traditional Gullah Geechee cuisine, including red rice, okra soup, and collard greens…
