Asian longhorned beetle detected in South Carolina

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Officials with the Clemson University Department of Plant Industry (DPI) said an Asian longhorned beetle was detected in South Carolina.

Officials said the infestation was found the grounds of a commercial shopping center in Mount Pleasant on Aug. 24 by two off-duty DPI inspectors.

According to the DPI, when the beetle bores into a tree, it weakens the tree and ultimately kills it. . Infested trees can also become safety hazards, since branches can drop and trees can fall over, especially during storms…
