Measles threat looms in schools as vaccination rates fall short of recommendations

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Health officials are sounding the alarm after a third confirmed case of measles was reported in South Carolina. The latest case, identified in Upstate South Carolina, involved a patient with no previous immunity — and officials say the source of the infection remains unknown.

Medical experts warn the situation could escalate quickly due to measles’ extremely contagious nature, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates.

“Measles is one of the most transmissible agents that we’re familiar with,” said Kent Stock, epidemiologist for Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “If given any opportunity, there’s a much higher likelihood of getting infected.”…
