Charleston Animal Control reminds city residents of animal microchipping requirement

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The City of Charleston’s police department is reminding residents about the microchipping requirements for all dogs and cats in the city.

According to Charleston Animal Control, residents must have their animals microchipped or have a collar on at all times with appropriate owner information. The city law said it the animal can be over four months old, however local shelters said they can be put in as early as at eight weeks old. It’s part of an effort to improve the chances of reunification if a pet goes missing.

“From the positive stories that we’ve found a stray animal that we were able to reunite with its family to finding a deceased animal on the side of the road. We’re able to scan that animal for a chip and at least give that family closure so they know what happened to their missing pet,” Courtney Bayles, animal control supervisor for CPD, said. “Then on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, animal cruelty investigations.”…
