CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – In honor of Child Passenger Safety Week, the South Carolina Department of Public Health is holding events to ensure car seats are installed correctly and used at the proper stages of a child’s development.
Many parents may move their children out of booster seats too early, according to state health officials. A recent review found nearly 90% of children under 10 were using lap and shoulder seat belts when they should have been in booster seats still. More than half of those seats were also improperly installed.
“Sometimes we’re in the parking lot doing an event and cars will go by, and you can see kids in the back seat who are not being restrained properly,” the department’s Child Safety Program Coordinator Kevin Poor said. “In a lot of cases, those parents just aren’t stopping to get their car seats checked.”…
