2 weapons found at Berkeley Middle School in one week; officials reassure parents

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Berkeley County School District and law enforcement leaders are working to reassure the community after two separate incidents involving weapons at Berkeley Middle School this week.

On Monday morning, school administrators and police responded to a tip that a student might have a weapon. Officers placed the school on a “hold,” which allows staff to keep classrooms secure while isolating the situation. Inside a classroom, a student was located, handcuffed and escorted out without incident. A search revealed a 9 mm handgun with a loaded magazine containing 11 rounds concealed in the student’s waistband. The student was taken into custody and charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds.

Two days later, on Wednesday, another student was reported to possibly have a weapon. School resource officers searched the student and confiscated a knife.
