What to do with your unused sandbags

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Do you have unused sandbags from your tropical storm-related preparations? Keep them on hand for future use.

Municipalities across the Lowcountry distributed sand and sandbag materials last week in anticipation of Imelda’s potential impacts, based on models and forecast data that indicated the storm would approach the South Carolina coast. The storm made a turn out to sea, limiting local impacts.

Hurricane Season runs through the end of November, so your leftover sandbags should be kept on hand should another storm threaten the coast. Berkeley County Government provided some tips to help store materials:

  • Sandbags can be saved and reused if they have not been exposed to floodwater
  • Keep sandbags clean in a dry place for future use

If you do not want to reuse or store them, spread the sand on lawns or landscape beds and discard the bag in your trash can or at a convenience center…
