CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Jewish communities across the Lowcountry are observing Yom Kippur with heightened security measures prompted by a rise in religious violence across the country.
At the Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Mount Pleasant, Rabbi Yossi Refson said the increased vigilance has become part of daily life but it’s more important now than ever before.
“It’s of course concerning to see the rise in antisemitism, but we’re also seeing the rise against other faith-based groups as well. Churches are under attack as well. Faith in general around the world is under attack,” Refson said.
In recent months, there have been shootings at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan in September, a Minneapolis mass where children were targeted in August, and the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. Incidents like these have prompted places of worship in the Lowcountry to step up security more than ever before…
