MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) — Santee Cooper and Century Aluminum have reached an agreement to provide additional power to the manufacturer’s Mt. Holly facility through 2031.
Century officials said the move will help re-start a currently idle smelter, boosting the facility’s production by 50,000 metric tons and increasing the United States’ overall aluminum output by 10%. Century plans to invest $50 million in the project and create over 100 jobs, allowing the plant, which is currently operating at 75% capacity, to return to full production by summer 2026 for the first time since 2015.
“Century Aluminum is a major contributor to economic prosperity in Berkeley County and the entire Charleston region, and they are playing a leading role in regenerating America’s aluminum industry,” said Jimmy Staton, Santee Cooper President and CEO. “Santee Cooper is proud to be the power behind Century, supporting the quality products they produce, the important contributions they make to our community, and the quality jobs they provide to our neighbors. We’re pleased to be part of this expansion and look forward to working together for many more years.”…
