MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) – Monday marks the 50th anniversary of the formal dedication of one of the U.S. Navy’s most distinguished aircraft carriers as a memorial.
The U.S.S. Yorktown began its new chapter on Oct. 13, 1975.
It was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the Navy and was built in a record 16-and-a-half months in Newport News, Virginia. The ship would go on to play a significant role in the Pacific offensive during World War II, receiving the Presidential Unit Citation and earning 11 battle stars for service during the war…
