Community to rally for food drive as SNAP benefits halt leaves Charleston families in need

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Joe Cunningham Law announced Wednesday that they will be hosting a community food drive the first week of November, benefiting the Lowcountry Food Bank.

According to the organizers, the food drive was spurred on by the government shutdown and the halting of federal funding and SNAP benefits for millions of Americans. This leaves some communities in crisis as SNAP operates as some residents primary means of purchasing groceries.

“Having served in Congress during the longest government shutdown in history in 2019, I saw firsthand the devastating ripple effects these political failures have on real people,” said former Congressman and attorney Joe Cunningham. “Every shutdown looks different, but the anxiety and pain for families who rely on programs like SNAP is always the same. When a family’s primary source for putting food on the table vanishes overnight, it’s our local responsibility to respond. This food drive is about providing immediate relief and showing our community that we have each other’s backs.”…
