NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The Community Resource Center in North Charleston is witnessing an increase in demand for food assistance as the government shutdown reached day 29 and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program faces a November deadline.
Louis Smith, the executive director of the center, claimed that, on average, the organization saw 200 cars. In recent days, that number has tripled to 600.
“I think the problem is threefold, obviously, there’s the food stamps, and there’s a panic,” Smith said. “People are concerned that there may not be food stamps in November or SNAP benefits in November. Inflation has taken a toll as well.”…
