CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A Lowcountry holiday tradition is marking 35 years on Sunday.
The Charleston Holiday Festival of Lights has been bringing joy to Charlestonians since Nov. 9, 1990, when it first debuted at the James Island County Park. Organizers started the event after Hurricane Hugo destroyed many of the trees in the area.
The inaugural event featured 18 light displays over a two-mile route and attracted nearly 85,000 people. Decades later, the festival has grown to include over 750 custom-built light displays and attracts millions of visitors annually…
