Charleston woman working to rebuild her mother’s Jamaica home after Hurricane Melissa

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A Charleston resident is trying to help her family rebuild in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa destroyed her mother’s home last month.

West Ashley resident Sheronea Altunbas hopes to raise $20,000 to rebuild the house. Altunbas grew up in Jamaica and says seeing the destruction across the island was devastating. She says the tragedy has also taught her a valuable lesson about the fragility of life.

“When you look at where you grew up as a child and everything is just like gone, it hurts,” she said. “I cry when I see everything. It brings tears to my eyes.”…
