CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Charleston to march in solidarity with the Remove the Regime rally in Washington, D.C., calling for constitutional rights and government accountability.
Participants united near the Aquarium garage to begin their march past Marion Square and south on Meeting Street to City Hall. The protesters marched 3.8 miles to oppose ICE deportations without due process and the withholding of SNAP benefits, demanding human rights, healthcare and the right to protest.
This action comes after October’s “No Kings” rallies, which drew more than 7 million people nationwide and 38,000 in South Carolina, organiser Bonnie Cleaveland said. North Charleston and Summerville held large demonstrations, but organisers say Charleston’s restrictive protest ordinances prevented similar action downtown.
