KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) — Residents on Kiawah Island are rallying to support the hundreds of Jamaican workers on the island, after Hurricane Melissa inflicted catastrophic damage on the Caribbean island.
Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Oct. 28 as a Category 5 storm and became one of the strongest hurricanes in recent years. At least 45 people were killed, and there was an estimated $8 billion in damage.
Many of the 300 Jamaicans who are employed on Kiawah as housekeepers, servers, and bartenders, either full-time or through H2B work visas, are set to return home at the end of the island’s busy season in December…
