Discarded ashes from grill sparked townhome garage fire

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Discarded ashes from a charcoal grill are believed to have sparked a Sunday afternoon townhome fire.

Crews with the Charleston Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible structure fire off Water Lotus Lane. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the first-floor garage of a three-story condo.

The occupants told firefighters that they had used a charcoal grill the day before and cleaned the grill after use, disposing of the ashes in the garage after they cooled, according to Charleston Fire officials…
