NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The family of an autistic student who had a school resource officer pull a gun on him at Fort Dorchester High School is now calling for more autism sensitivity training.
This comes after the Nov. 7 incident that led to a school resource officer drawing his service weapon on the student and having him lie on the ground. Police say a staff member spoke to the officer about a student who reportedly told another student that her grandson was carrying a weapon. When the officer asked the student to remove his hands from the pockets of his hoodie, he allegedly said he had “a switch,” which was misinterpreted as a “Glock switch.”
The misinterpretation led to the gun being pulled on him, and the student later being detained. Following a manifestation meeting to discuss disciplinary action, the student’s family removed him from the school district, got a trauma therapist, and is considering pursuing legal action…
