NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A man was taken into custody in North Charleston Friday night after officers discovered an automatic weapon during a traffic stop, police announced Monday.
While conducting a proactive patrol near Peppermill Parkway, an officer with the North Charleston Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with unlawful window tint he’d seen drifting in its lane near the G Club, according to the department. The driver pulled into the the Marathon gas station at Ashley Phosphate and Stall Road.
After smelling the odor of marijuana, a passenger was asked to step out of the vehicle and reached into his waistband. NCPD said. A search of the car yielded a “fully automatic machine gun” that had been stowed underneath the front passenger seat alongside a switch device, which can convert a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic one.
