‘It’s more than just a tree’: James Island residents push to save grand oak

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) — A request to remove a 40-inch grand sand live oak tree on James Island has been put on hold after the Charleston County BZA found the applicant doesn’t have standing.

The BZA meeting revealed that more than 200 residents submitted comments against the removal of the tree. After the BZA committee asked the applicant questions and went into an executive session, they decided to hold off on voting since they believe the tree is public property and the applicant lacks the right to request the removal of the tree.

The property owner at 2176 Richardson Road submitted a variance request to remove the tree to facilitate the subdivision of two residential lots on the land. The description of the request said the tree’s presence significantly impedes the property owner’s right to access and develop their property…
