Yellow-legged hornets spreading in the South Carolina Lowcountry

Several sightings of yellow-legged hornets nests have been reported in the Lowcountry. The hornet is known to kill beehives.

An invasive species that threatens local pollinators has attempted to make its home in both Jasper and Beaufort counties over the past two years.

The most recent sighting in Jasper County occurred Nov. 21 when citizens reported a yellow-legged hornet’s nest on Captain Bill Road in Ridgeland. A large number of yellow-legged hornets were also caught recently in traps in the Bluffton area by beekeepers…
